Kinesiology is the study of movement. It is the science of how muscles act and coordinate to move the body. Kinesiology believes that each muscle in our body is wired to an inherent energy system within the body. By monitoring the muscle responses, a therapist can tap into a person’s bio-computer to find and eliminate the cause of disease or stress. This theory is based on the premise that there are certain indicator muscles in our body which will signal when there is an energy disturbance. A practiced kinesiologist can, through muscle monitoring, detect and correct the imbalances. They believe that if appropriate changes are made at the correct level, Kinesiology can treat almost any ailment.
The body is a complete functional and interactive biological system and a kinesiologist treats the body holistically. The body has a remarkable bio feedback mechanism which can be read through muscle responses. The problem may be emotional, mental, physical or energetic. Kinesiology purports to treat many things- from back pain, allergies, sinusitis, digestive disorders, hot flushes and even children’s behavioral problems through this method.
Kinesiology was developed in the 1960’s by chiropractors in the United States and has now become one of the fastest growing alternative therapies. It was developed by American chiropractor, George Goodheart.
Various techniques are used in the treatment of Kinesiology to help keep the body in optimum working condition. Nutrition, acupuncture, neuro -lymphatic and neuro- vascular and emotional stress release are some of the techniques used. It is not in the scope of this article to go into detail on each of these techniques but suffice it to say that in the hands of a seasoned professional, patients have testified to positive improvements in their health.
A typical session involves a fully clothed physical examination. Then the kinesiologist places the arms and legs in specific positions and applies light pressure. The response is recorded and this enables the kinesiologist to assess muscle-organ –meridian circuit imbalance. Once an imbalance has been found, a corrective strategy is planned. This may include nutritional supplements, acupressure, gentle structural realignment, a relaxing massage, exercises or even a complete lifestyle change.
The number of sessions required will depend on the severity of the problem and how long the problem has been around. It also depends on the lifestyle and mental attitude of the patient. They may need an average of four to six sessions varying on the degree of the problem.
In one word, everyone. People of all ages and fitness levels can benefit from Kinesiology. Even infants and children. It restores the whole body to a system of balance facilitating the self healing process. So go ahead and give Kinesiology a try.
