Iridology

What is iridology?

Iridology is a diagnostic technique, rather than a healing modality, used by many alternative and natural health practitioners. Proponents of iridology believe that a person's health history and current conditions can be detected by studying patterns and color changes in the iris. They will match what they see with charts that show the iris zones. Iris zones in the eye match up to specific parts of the body. There are approximately 90 zones indicated in an iris chart.

How did iridology come about?

The iridology method of diagnosis is said to have been founded by a Hungarian physician by the name of Ignaz von Peczely. It is widely believed that he was inspired to further study iridology when he noticed similarities in the streaks in the irises of one of his patients who had a broken leg and in the eyes of an owl he had found with a broken leg.

What can Iridology assist in diagnosing?

Iridology can assist other holistic medical arts in locating toxins in the body, inflammation and the stages of inflammation, weakness, strength, biochemical deficiencies and in assessing general health.

On an eye chart, you would find that the left side of the eye corresponds to the left side of the body, the right side to the right side of the body. The upper part of the iris corresponds with the upper organs such as brain and thyroid, the lower portion corresponds with lower organs such as bowels and kidneys. This is how illnesses or weaknesses are located.

In order to detect the nature of the problem, the layers of the iris are studied. By finding which layer is in defect, an iridologist can tell how progressed the illness is.

A look at the color of the iris can tell an iridologist what illnesses or deficiencies the patient is likely to have. For instance, blue eyed people are predisposed to upper respiratory illnesses, joint problems, and kidney and adrenal imbalances. Those with brown eyes should take care to get enough calcium and keep their circulatory system in good working order. People with mixed colors usually suffer with allergies, digestive, and liver problems.

The rings around the iris can also indicate to the iridologist what to check for if blood work is needed. If one has a dark band around the iris, it may indicate that the patient is not detoxifying properly. A person who is stressed or tense will have rings that are much like the growth rings of a tree. There are many others that help to pinpoint certain physical problems.

What can I expect when I visit an Iridologist?

Iridology has evolved greatly in the computer age. Nowadays an iridologist can take a picture of the iris and study it with the aid of a computer. There are different levels of diagnosis, and iridologist may use only one or multiple tools to get to the heart of your illness.

With simple visualization, the iridologist may use bright lights and a magnifier to get a close look. Or they may use slides or pictures of your eye. This is especially useful if there is not an iridologist close to you. You may be able to send a close up picture of your eye to an iridologist for reading.
