What Is Reiki?

Reiki, developed in the early 1900’s by Mikao Usui in Japan is a form of “hands on healing”. Derived from “rei” meaning ‘free passage’ and “ki” meaning ‘universal life energy’, it involves the transfer of energy from the practitioner to patient. Reiki also enhances the body’s natural ability to heal itself through the balancing of energy.

How Does Reiki Heal?

By enabling the transfer of energy from the practitioner’s body to the client’s, reiki helps to relieve symptoms of stress, induces relaxation and promotes healing. It is based on the idea that a “life force energy” flows through us at all times. We are always surrounded by an aura of energy. When this energy is at an ebb, we feel down and out and tend to become sick or stressed out. When this energy is high we are happy and healthy. Reiki masters and practitioners can transfer energy from their own bodies to the patient and thus help him heal or feel better. The Practitioner places his hands on the body and allows the energy to flow out of him into the patient. The skillful practitioner knows when enough energy has been transferred and it is time to stop.

Does Reiki Work For Everyone?

Reiki works as much as one is willing to let it work. A person has to be willing and in a positive frame of mind to use the energy which is being transferred to him. If a person so chooses, no energy can be transferred and no healing will happen.

How Do I Get A Reiki Treatment?

In a typical Reiki treatment, the patient (fully clothed!) is asked to lie down on a table. Energy is then transferred to the client through the hands of the practitioner. It does not involve any pressure or manipulation of tissues as in a massage.

Reiki can also be practiced over a distance without immediate physical contact.

What Will I Feel During The Treatment?

It varies from person to person – while some feel warmth, others feel a tingling sensation. Some do not feel any physical sensation at all but do experience a sense of calm, peacefulness and well being.
