Chlorella

What is Chlorella?

Chlorella is a single-cell algae that contains high levels of chlorophyll and a host of essential vitamins and minerals, making it one of the true superfoods for the health conscious. Unlike vitamin and mineral supplements, the constituent goodies of Chlorella are bio-chelated instead of artificially bonded together, making them a cinch for the body to ingest and break down into useful parts. As such the vitamins and minerals within chlorella are more readily available than those in synthesised vitamin and mineral supplements.

Why Would I Bother Chowing Chlorella?

Chlorella has been touted one of nature’s detoxifiers by many researchers looking into the effects of Chlorella on heavy mineral deposits in the body. Numerous experiments have reported chlorella’s assistance in the breakdown of metallic toxins like cadmium, lead and even mercury! The fibrous shell of chlorella binds with these minerals on the way through the digestive tract and they are excreted with this shell. Of course, these kind of deposits are often embedded beneath a lot of other toxins and stressors that the body must attend to first, so the removal of hydrocarbon and heavy mineral deposits often begins 3-6 months after you have begun a regular Chlorella intake.

Another fantastic element of chlorella is its naturally high chlorophyll level, which is up to ten times that of edible greens that are noted for their high chlorophyll content. Chlorophyll contains digestive enzymes which are essential for breaking down all the tasty snacks ingested in the day. These enzymes speed up the whole digestive process and make sure that poisonous or toxic deposits in food don’t get stuck in the body, and that if they are ingested they pass through the digestive tract relatively quickly.

Things to Watch with Chlorella Products

Choose a brand that does not freeze dry, heat treat or pasteurize the chlorella, as this pretty much destroys any of the goodness within this fragile single celled algae, and gives you almost no reason to ingest it. Go for cold pressed capsules or powder to ensure that you’re getting what is advertised on the label.

Chlorella is a great nutritional supplement in a balanced diet for an additional vitamin boost and to increase digestive function. Dig in!

When you have found a good chlorella brand, make sure you take care with the contents. Exposure to UV rays will again damage a lot of the goodies found in Chlorella, so its best to keep the container away from harsh light and in a cool dry place. Oxygen will also break down the structure of chlorella and render it nutritiously useless. So when going for a scoop of chlorella in your smoothie, tighten the lid back on!
