Well we all know what lemon juice is for, don’t we? Great in salad dressings, nice in cocktails, a bit sour if you drink it by itself. Great if you put a squeeze into a glass of filtered water to start the day with a liver cleansing drink. Lemon juice has long been used in skincare by Indian women and pioneering Caucasians, using nature’s pharmacopoeia to its full potential.
Lemon juice can be used as a conditioner. When a little is mixed with water and put through the hair after shampooing lemon juice will add shine and bounce to your hair and give it new manageability. It also helps to get rid of dandruff and keep the scalp healthy. For those blondies out there you can use a stronger formula and leave it in for a while to help tone down brassiness. I you want blonde highlights and don’t want to smother your head in hideous solutions containing ammonia and peroxide and other nasties, the put neat lemon juice through your hair and sit in the sun to dry it. The combined action of the sunlight, heat and the fruit acids in the lemon juice result in a gently bleaching process. Plus it’s cheap!
Lemon juice is a fantastic skin brightener. It has long been used by Indian women to even up darker areas of skin such as the underarms and neck, if you have dark skin. For the lighter skinned it is great to tone down elbows, knees, freckles and age spots. Some women get facial discolouration during pregnancy, often called ’the mask of pregnancy’, and lemon juice is a great natural way to help gently fade it away.
Apart from its skin bleaching properties, lemon juice is a natural cleanser which helps to remove dead skin cells and can be used as a toner for oily skin, or watered down for a general refreshing spritz. Dabbing lemon juice on blackheads and leaving for a few minutes a day can help reduce blackheads while a good soak in lemon juice is great for smoothing rough feet, as the fruit acids work to break down hard calloused layers of dead skin.
Well there is one more thing that lemon juice is good for. Put away that gross toxic tasting mouthwash and use lemon juice instead. Use lemon juice to reduce bad breath and keep the teeth and gums healthy. What more can I say, take a trip out to the garden and pick one today. Don’t have a lemon tree?
