Spirulina is potentially billions of years old! It is a single-celled blue-green algae that is capable of thriving in briny water and infertile land. Being such a simple organism, spirulina is easily digested, making the vitamins, nutrients and proteins within this algae readily absorbed. Spirulina is truly a modern day super-food that could spell the end for famine in the world, let alone optimizing the health of those in calorie-overloaded countries. Spirulina contains the most potent nutrient combination of any food researched to date, and is well worth a try on your quest for total body wellbeing.
Spirulina contains ten times more beta-carotene than carrots, is 60% vegetable protein yet is low in fat, is rich in iron and vitamin B-12 (is this the meat alternative that vegetarians have been searching for all along?), and also contains fatty acids and phtyonutrients. What does all this mean? spirulina is an easily digestible treasure-trove of edible energy, that’s what! And current research suggests that just 2-10g per day of spirulina is enough to experience significant health results for anyone!
Do not despair, oh queasy one! Spirulina is readily available in powder and tablet form, making consumption very easy indeed. Stir a teaspoon of spirulina into your next fruit smoothie, or sprinkle some into warm mashed potatoes and tuck right in. Just a word of caution, make sure you select spirulina from a brand name that ensures they dehydrate or cold press the spirulina into powder or tablet form! Heat treated spirulina is not the super-food it claims to be, since many of the vitamins, phytonutrients and so on are destroyed at extreme temperatures.
If the idea of consuming spirulina in dried form doesn’t do it for you, you can go all out and grow your own. It’s pretty extensive, requiring a pond with a large paddle-wheel that creates some turbulence to stimulate oxygen and growth. Either way, if you choose to grow your own or eat from the jar, know that you are contributing to a better environment! Compared to beef-protein or even soy-protein, spirulina causes less soil erosion, less consumption of energy, and water per acre, and doesn’t leech nutrients from the soil. Your body will thank you and the earth will thank you. Can’t get much more satisfying than that! So tell your mother to tell her friends... spirulina is where it’s at!
